My Students
Your favorite author was not born with their incredible ability to create the books you love; they, like everyone, began somewhere. I am the lucky one who gets to see the beginnings of the great authors of tomorrow. My students need tools to get started.
I teach kindergarten at a public elementary school in South Philadelphia.
I am not provided with any school supplies and so I must purchase or find everything myself. This includes basic materials like paper, pencils, books, and even trash bags. We have an incredibly diverse school community. Our students and their families come from all over the world; places such as Mexico, Afghanistan, Nepal, Cambodia, and Vietnam. Roughly 25% of our students are English language learners and about 94% of our student body is economically disadvantaged. My class size usually ranges between 25-30 students. The children are very sweet, eager to learn, and excited to be at school.
My Project
My students will be using the primary composition book to write in. The notebook will keep their stories, journal entries, and other pieces of writing they do during writer's workshop and other times throughout the day. The pages of the notebooks have lines that encourage handwriting practice and a space for them to illustrate. The whiteboards are used for a variety of learning activities. They encourage total participation from the entire class and involve the students in a tactile way. Like the notebooks, the whiteboards have lines to help guide students as they perfect their handwriting. One resource we often run out of quickly is dry erase markers. They are necessary and important tools that are an integral part of our school day.
In previous years my students have kept their writing on paper in folders.
It gets very messy with papers being crumpled, torn, and lost. They are not easily stored and handed out. Having the primary composition books will solve these problems. The notebooks and the other requested writing materials will make it possible to carry out our writer's workshop with few obstacles. My students can refine their writing skills and find their voices as young authors.
