Help me give my students vertical whiteboards, dry-erase markers, and math notebooks to build a thinking classroom where student thinking is maximized by working collaboratively on math tasks.

My Project

My students love math but struggle with critical thinking in problem solving. How many times this year have I heard, "I don't know what to do," before attempting a problem? After reading Building Thinking Classrooms in Mathematics by Peter Liljedahi and learning about Teaching Through Problem Solving this summer, I am ready to transform my classroom to a dynamic Thinking Classroom. This approach to teaching math involves using rich, non-routine thinking tasks, forming random groups, and utilizing vertical non-permanent surfaces to keep students physically and mentally engaged. Students shift their focus from passive listening to active participation and thinking.

The donations to this project will help students become active creators of knowledge.

Students work collaboratively at their vertical non-permanent surfaces, can quickly erase mistakes, to reduce the risk of trying new ideas. Standing and working at vertical whiteboards fosters better posture, enhances non-verbal communication, and increases knowledge mobility, leading to more dynamic and collaborative problem-solving.

The tools for the thinking classroom (vertical non-permanent surfaces, dry erase markers, and math notebooks) foster greater student independence. It encourages them to engage more actively with their learning environment, interact with other groups to seek help or justify their work, engage in productive struggle, and shift my role as the teacher to facilitate these interactions. My goal is for students to utilize their collective knowledge within the classroom and build their independence and confidence for real-world problem-solving.
