My Students
The students I teach are between 10th and 12th grade. The students in my class have a clinical diagnosis of severe emotional disturbance. They are in a single classroom all day because they have a hard time interacting with peers and adults.
I am entering my 7th year as an ED teacher, and my students are the most inspirational students I know.
They all have hardships at home. Their lives are filled with poverty, drugs, gangs, and other difficulties. Our school is a career tech high school, and all of our students are being educated to be career and college-ready.
Typically, my students are referred to as the "Bad Students," which is the farthest from the truth. They need someone on their side. In our class, we have created that space for our students. Now that they feel comfortable with us, we want to give them the same opportunities as their peers. We believe in them.
My Project
Knowing that one of the major barriers for our students to access post-secondary studies or employment is the lack of financial resources to pay for life after high school. These materials are a reward and will be provided to one of my graduating seniors who will be entering the workforce. Our Valedictorian has worked hard in such unprecedented times. Securing a position working for the city as a mechanic. Similar to entering college, we want to make sure our students are prepared with all the equipment and tools they need. Rewarding our student for a job well done.
The tools and other essential items will level out the playing field for him - mitigating any stress and isolation he might have otherwise felt.
After all, it's hard to focus and function at a high level when your basic needs are not being met. Hardworking students have demonstrated and proven that they will make the most of every opportunity. Therefore these tools and other essentials will fortify their efforts as they tackle their transition into the workforce. This is just what they need to move forward to establish themselves as history makers!
