Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The words reuse and recycled are taught to students in second grade. I want to do much more than just teach them the meaning. I want them to internalize it and be part of the going green movement. I want to teach them to take care of the resources mother nature provides for us such as paper.
My students live in the inner-city.
They come from impoverished homes and qualify for free federal lunch at school. At a very early age my students have already encountered tragedy and heartache. They live in very close proximity for a soup kitchen and amid factories. Their playground are the dangerous street. With all their hardships they still manage to come to school with at smile and willingness to learn. They value education and want to do their best in school.
My Project
I am requesting a laminating machine, pouches, and a storage stool, to start teaching my students the importance of reusing materials. A laminating machine will help us create less waste and use of paper. Students will be able to reuse worksheets, and other instructional games. Laminating things will ensure a longer life for the materials and also lessen the use of paper. I am requesting a storage stool to build a small listening center where students can have a small corner of the room to sit and enjoy practicing their reading. These resources will immensely help me students not just learn more about reusing, recycling and saving our planet but also help them be on their way to reading proficiency.
Second grade is the last chance for students to receive reading instruction.
All students must reach reading proficiency by 9 or else face a greater chance of dropping our of school. Please allow my students the opportunity to beat these odds and become readers for life. With the resources requested my students will learn a life long lesson on how to take care of our Earth.
