it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go." by Dr. Seuss. This quote sums up the goal I have for my students. I have 25 amazing first graders who live in a low-income, high poverty area where they face many challenges in their daily lives, but they love school! My students work super hard and they love to explore, discover and learn.
My goal is to instill in each child a love of learning and the belief that they can do anything!
Our school year just began and the Covid pandemic is still lingering, my students need to have their own sets of materials to use while in school.
Most of my students are stepping foot into the classroom for the first time since March 2020. They have had to deal with the many challenges of distance learning and are happy to be back in the building even if they have to be distanced while wearing masks. They missed school and the stability it provided them. My desire is to provide them all I can during this transitional time so that they can feel loved and cared for.
My Project
The science of reading is a research based approach to how we learn to read. The science of reading is based on a phonics approach that teaches children to manipulate sounds in words. Through the research it has shown that students benefit from sound walls rather than traditional word walls. The sound wall alternative allows students to see how words are connected by phonics.
I am requesting materials for sound walls which will help my students access the letter spelling for sounds that they need and in learning to read unfamiliar words independently.
Sound wall instruction will begin with direct, explicit, and systematic instruction. The sound walls will help me as I teach my students to read and write.
This project will allow me to provide my students with a complete sound wall and individual student materials. The sound pictures have faces of diverse children showing how their mouth should look for each sound. My students will be able to use these as visual cues to make each sound correctly. This will be extremely important since we are still wearing masks in school. Having the mouth pictures will truly support my students in their learning.
