This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are passionate young people and they know first hand the injustices that need righting in our community. They are brilliant and they work hard every day alongside their teachers to bridge the opportunity gap and create a safe community for their peers. My students are fighting the good fight every day. Many of them will be the first person in their family to graduate from high school and most of them will be the first in their family to attend university. We are doing a great job of supporting their journey to university... we just need a little help with obtaining materials.

My students live in a pretty tough area.

Statistically, for every neighbor they know who's in college, there are three that they know who are in prison. My students have picked to go a different direction. My students understand the value of their education and see it as a tool to make the world around them better.

My Project

We will be reading The Absolutely True Story of a Part Time Indian as part of an interdisciplinary unit in which students explore the 4 I's of Oppression. Students will explore ideological oppression, institutional oppression, interpersonal oppression, and internalized oppression through character and plot analysis.

By explicitly framing an understanding of the roots of oppression, we can be empowered to resist.

Empowering marginalized people is a radical act and you can say "DAMN THE MAN" with a donation! This text explores the institutional and ideological oppression of indigenous folks and the interpersonal and internalized oppression of a young man. By exploring these forces at work in a piece of literature, we can learn to identify them in our society and our own experiences.
