My Project

In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, students need more support closing gaps than ever before. When we started this year, most students had regressed drastically. They are also two years behind in their social development. We are faced with supporting developmental, social-emotional, and academic needs in new and creative ways.

In order to support self-regulation and sensory needs, students use a break area in a quiet area of my classroom.

Sensory and hands-on materials are meant to support center-based activities, behavior plan incentives, and student self-regulation. Kinetic sand, magnetic tiles, and the other hands on materials will be used in a sensory and break area where students can get the sensory input they need and learn regulation strategies through scheduled and unscheduled breaks in the break area. Timers are needed to help students time their breaks and time on tasks until their next break or preferred activity.

Multi-colored folders, storage cases and stand up laptop stands will support the intensive reading intervention curriculum. Students will use the stand to lead multisensory routines, they will organize and build words with the use of storage containers and organize their materials in colored folders based on the group they are in. Calculators and Expo markers will provide another math center where students can make their own problems, work them out on their board and check their work independently.

Students with learning disabilities need to be able to access reading material and enjoy it as much as their peers do. They also need a way to get their thoughts down to create meaningful writing pieces without worrying about letter formation, spelling or typing. Students will use the headphones with microphones to help give them access to technology tools to produce their work and promote critical and creative thinking.
