My students need fully-functioning instruments to ensure their success in band. This repair kit and swabs would allow me to keep their instruments clean and in working order.
"My saxophone is squeaking...my trumpet won't make a sound...I think something just fell off my flute..." These are the sounds of a band rehearsal at my school. With an aging inventory of instruments, all too often the need for repair stops a rehearsal in its tracks.
My students are awesome!
All too often teachers claim that they have the best students. That is impossible, because mine truly are the best. What makes them special is their integrity and strength of character. They attend an extremely diverse large urban middle school. They are passionate about the music program and go above and beyond what is asked of them. In spite of having many old, broken instruments, they succeed. They participate in local and regional festivals and perform regularly for a wide range of school functions. My students come to band each and every day with boundless energy and enthusiasm. They are an absolute joy!
My Project
Due to budget cuts, I do the majority of repair work on the instruments myself. We do not have the money to send the instruments to a professional, so last summer I took an advanced level repair course. I am requesting a repair kit as well as some clarinet swabs. These resources will enable me to clean, maintain and fix the children's instruments.
Learning a musical instrument is difficult.
It is extremely frustrating to learn on broken equipment. My students play on instruments fixed with duct tape, paper clips and rubber bands. They deserve better! The resources from this grant will allow me to use the repair techniques I have studied, so that my students can learn on properly functioning instruments.
