My Students
Have you ever walked into a room that was so hot that you felt distracted and couldn't concentrate on the information being taught? Students Basic Needs need to be met first in the classroom and one of these needs is feeling comfortable with the temperature.
I teach 700 elementary students in grades k-5.
We just added full day kindergarten and we are very excited to be giving kindergarten back music this year. I teach in a very low income district in which most of our students are on free or reduced lunch and we have a high need for donations and support. Many of our students and their family members struggle with the language barrier as they are native Spanish speakers.
My Project
I am requesting for a portable air conditioning unit that we can use in the classroom to keep the room cool. We do not have any source of air circulation in the room and we are right above the boiler room. In the winter our room is still 80 degrees Fahrenheit and my students leave the room with bullets of sweat running down their face. The portable air conditioner will help us make students comfortable so they can learn. In addition it will also help prevent the instruments from going out of tune and from our wooden xylophones from warping under the extreme temperatures. This air conditioner will make it so when I teach my students I can make sure that they are actually learning instead of worrying about how uncomfortable they are.
This air conditioner will literally save our music program in our district.
Students will want to come to music instead of fear it because of the temperature in the room. In addition students will learn the materials being taught better because their basic needs are being met and they are more comfortable with their environment.
