My students need 2 portable air conditioners. They live in Hawaii on the island of Oahu and on the Leeward side which is the hottest part of the island.
I teach English on the island of Oahu. My school was built in 1967 and has never been remodeled. Everyday my classroom is hot and muggy. My students already enter my classroom unmotivated but after entering they become hot and tired as well.
My school has the greatest number of native Hawaiian students in the U.S.
Sadly, they are also some of the most economically disadvantaged students in the U.S. It is difficult to encourage them to believe that education can change their lives. It is even more difficult to encourage them to want to learn in a classroom that is 90 degrees and humid. The heat and humidity makes them tired and unmotivated. Air conditioning would create an environment that is physically comfortable which would allow for students to focus on learning instead of how hot they are.
My Project
Air conditioning in my classroom would make my students physically comfortable which would motivate them to be engaged in effective learning activities. Reading and writing are not the easiest subjects for economically disadvantaged students especially when they are so hot that they are sweating. Having a cool classroom to come to daily would be inviting which will encourage my students to not only want to come to class but also want to learn how to become good readers and writers.
Air conditioning will create a physically comfortable environment where my students can focus on learning and not on how uncomfortable they are from the heat.
Becoming strong readers and writers will enable my students to be successful in all academic areas.
