This list started with a list titled "Too Good to Miss Books: Second Grade Level" that I picked up at my local library. I have just moved to a second grade classroom this year at a low-income school, and my library is slim. I had very few books for my classroom shelves that I could use from intermediate grades.
Each morning, I start our day with a question of the day using our sight words for the week. Students move their names under the appropriate "yes" or "no" column. Last week, I used the word "many." I asked, "Do you have many books at home?" I was surprised at the number of names that lined up in the "no" column.
Many of my students are reading below grade level, and I am sure their exposure to literature is one of a number of factors. That being said, it is a factor that I can help during the school day.
I am asking for a number of books from my library's recommended reads, and some from "best classroom read aloud" lists, to build our classroom library. We can use these books for our daily Drop Everything And Read (DEAR) times and as classroom read alouds. These books will be used to increase vocabulary, increase fluency, and teach life skills through discussions in our classroom. We will also be able to use them to study the craft of writing in writer's workshop.
Sample titles include: Best in Show for Rotten Ralph, Ruby Lu, Brave and True, Gooney Bird, Roy Makes a Car, The Library Lion, Houndsley and Catina, If I Built a Car, and Wild About Books.
