My Students
Our class is comprised of eight, amazing students with autism across three grade levels who learn in many different ways. Our students come from different wards from within DC, not just from the surrounding neighborhood. Our class is a self-contained classroom, which means that the majority of each students' learning takes place within our room. Many of our students also receive some instruction in the general education setting and are able to interact and socialize with their typically developing peers throughout the day.
Autism is a developmental disability that affects the way our students interact and communicate with others.
Autism is a spectrum disorder and our students' skills and abilities fall all over the range of the spectrum. We have students who are approaching grade level academically as well as students who are not yet communicating verbally. Each of our students is unique and has their own strengths, gifts and support needs. All of our students need support in the areas of communication, behavior, social interaction and daily living skills.
My Project
Our classroom would not be able to function without printed visual supports for our students. Many children with autism benefit from taking in information via more than one method, so additional visual supports in addition to verbal prompts are very much needed in our room.
We rely on printer toner in order to make these important visual supports.
Since we have kindergarteners, 1st, and 2nd graders, we develop tasks which are easily customized by grade and developmental level. Independent work tasks can be printed and reused for years to come and changed out depending on which students there are that school year. Printed communication icons and assistive technology inlays can also be printed and reused to support students expressive vocabularies.
The toner requested in this project would help us create additional independent work tasks, communication icons, and visual supports for our students. Printed resources need to be in full color so they can be compared to real-world objects and people. Our students will benefit greatly from the use of these items in our classroom.
