My students need copies of The Lorax, a book that fosters environmental stewardship as well as materials for creating a hands-on project focused on recycling.
Imagine trying to learn about 21st century technology while working with early 20th century facilities. It does not provide the best atmosphere for my biology students. My school is in an urban high needs district and does not have adequate resources for my students who dream of going to college.
My students are wonderful, creative people, who despite their situations, have a positive attitude in life.
The majority live in poverty and qualify for free lunches. They do not have background and exposure to best serve them when taking the NYS Regents exams. For the last two years, I was able to provide them with a science enrichment day at Cornell University. It was amazing to see my students working in world class laboratories. They loved it and I believe it inspired some to pursue their interest in science. However, without the technology and supplies in my classroom, I fear that I cannot give them the best opportunities.
My Project
I am requesting a class set of the Dr. Seuss book "The Lorax". Although this book was written for children, it contains adult themes and ideas about personal responsibility and stewardship. The Lorax is a great way to introduce environmental science because of its unique illustrations and colorful writing. Current educational research has shown that children's books are a valuable tool that can be used to teach challenging concepts. The Lorax is a resource our students can use to explore a topic that will have a large impact on their lives. After they read the book, students will construct posters on recycling, waste reduction, and plastic free initiatives. These posters will be displayed throughout our school to promote taking care of Mother Earth.
As achievements in engineering and manufacturing move us toward 21st Century lifestyles, problems emerge as a result of these processes and cleanup concerns plague us.
There are innovative, yet natural, solutions for the cleanup of polluting by-products and I want my biology students to learn about them.
Please help me inspire my students to begin a lifelong habit of recycling and reducing waste. I want to make a difference in their lives for years to come by promoting environmental stewardship
