Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My school has students from Pre-K through sixth grade. Approximately 70% of our students qualify for free and reduced-priced lunch. We also have a high English Language Learner population. Many students in my class have accommodations to help meet their diverse learning needs.

My goal is to engage students in creative activities to foster a love for math and science and think of themselves as problem solvers.

My students love working on challenging and creative activities, but our tight daily schedule does not leave much time for such activities. Increasingly, over the last few weeks students have asked if they can stay in from recess to play with the few games I have. I would like to encourage my students to engage in brain building activities, by providing them with challenging and creative games.

My Project

My students are creative and love a challenge. I'd like to incorporate makerspace activities in my classroom as often as possible. To do so, I'd like to give my students opportunities to create solutions to real-life needs.

I would like makerspace idea books to give my students a springboard to be creative problem solvers.

These resources will help me and my students think of simple tools we use, and how we can improvise them, or make them more affordable and accessible.

I'd also like my students to extend their capacity to think of math problems conceptually. This will help them have a growth mindset and feel empowered to think of themselves as mathematicians.
