Hello! I have organized a morning Reader's Circle as part of the before-school program at a K-5th grade charter school in Chicago. The school serves students of mostly immigrant backgrounds, many of whom speak English as a second language. In order to foster literacy and general excitement about reading I have kept the Reader's Circle pretty informal and the student response has been great! They are very excited about hearing a story in the morning before school even starts! The students meet me in the library to read a couple of books together. We also discuss the books, making connections and predictions based on the text and photos. The students were very excited about "The Art Lesson" by Tomie DePaola when we read that great book. When I have asked the students if they have any book requests, they have repeatedly asked for more books by Tomie DePaola. I would like to have an author study on Tomie DePaola and read as many of his books as possible. He writes about such a great range of topics! His books also appeal to a wide variety of ages. I would like to be able to purchase the books so that the students are able to share and read the books themselves. It would also be great to own the books so that we can re-read them at a later date or have the books to compare, as some of Tomie DePaola's books have related characters.
