Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My classroom is located in Washington state at a Title I school. Students at my school are hardworking, kind, eager individuals. Many students are first and second generation citizens from Africa, South America, and Asia. Our differing cultures, backgrounds, economic statuses, and languages provide richness in the classroom, but we also face challenges. One challenge is that we are incredibly underfunded. At HV, 80-85% of students qualify for free and reduced school lunch.

There are so many experiences and learning opportunities I wish I could have with our students if only I had the means.

My Project

Please help get books for my students! My students need books to help them celebrate their cultures. Such books include Pan de Sal Saves the Day: An Award-winning Children's Story from the Philippines and Chicken Sunday. They need books to help them deal with difficult age appropriate tolerance issues like bullying and getting along at recess. They need books to help us discuss race such as Let's Talk About Race and The Colors of Us. Plus many others!

Because students spend so much time in school, schools have a critically important opportunity and responsibility to ensure that all students get the support and help they need to become empathetic and tolerant.

I want my classroom to be a place that brings out the best in my students. The books I'm asking to purchase, with your help, are also a better representation of my students. I'm asking for books on strong accomplished women, amazing people of color, books to better understand and build empathy for people with disabilities, and everyday stories with characters that match the diverse racial and cultural backgrounds of students in my class. By reading about these role models and everyday people, students will be motivated to set goals and reach them.

With how turbulent American society has become students need this character education and diverse representation of characters more now than ever. Students deserve to be reminded that good people support them, will help them get supplies, and they need to be taught how to support one another. These books will help mold the minds of my young impressionable students for the better. Please donate and help my students become the amazing people they can and will be. Thank you!
