My students need to read this book so they can understand that they are like many others who come to the United States in search of a better life.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Tolerance for All
As children of immigrants and immigrants themselves, my students need to learn that they are not alone and should not be forsaken.
My students are worried about their future. Will they be able to stay in this country and take advantage of the opportunities that a great education can provide?
This book, Enrique's Journey, deals with the same issues facing my students and their families. The subject matter is of great interest to them, so they will want to read the book. Because my students' reading skills are below grade-level, this book will help them improve their reading skills, including increasing their academic vocabulary. Improved reading skills will help my students succeed in middle school, high school, college, and beyond.
My Project
I ordered a class set of the book Enrique's Journey by Sonia Nazario. This particular edition is a young adult adaptation from the adult book of the same name. Enrique's Journey documents the struggles of a 17 year-old from Honduras who comes to the United States in search of his mother. According to the website, www.enriquesjourney.com, "Enrique’s Journey for young adults has been adapted and updated and is aimed at middle school students and reluctant readers in high schools...New York City has made the YA edition part of its classroom curriculum."
In addition to reading the book with my classes, my students and I will engage in class discussions that delve into the issues of tolerance with regard to illegal immigration.
