My students need a rug, so a balanced literacy program can be implemented.
Everyday, we start our morning with morning meeting.
The students gather and share their feelings and experiences from the day before. The rug is a great place to get together and read books, play games, tell stories, read quietly and socialize.
Our school is comprised of over 700 students from all backgrounds. There are seven kindergarten classes. The school encourages a balanced literacy program which involves mini-lessons on the floor, but the school cannot afford to fund all classrooms with rugs.
My Project
Students will be sitting on the rug during mini-lessons taught by the teachers that come into the classroom. They will also have small groups with the teacher on the rug. During center time, they will engage in floor games they can play on the rug, instead of on the floor.
Donations will encourage the students to want to come to the rug and read.
They will be excited to have morning meeting and rug time. The rug will encourage social interactions between students and form bonds and friendships.
More than half of students from low‑income households
