This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
One of the greatest pleasures I have as a teacher is watching a student learn how to pedal a tricycle for the first time. The right foot--left foot pattern isn't so easy at first!
My students are 3-5 year old scholars who are working on many skills: language, literacy, gross and fine motor, executive functioning, and more!
The class collectively speaks a total of four languages, and many are first generation Americans from about 6 different countries. Most students are well fed and taken care of, but others are not always. Some things that all the students have in common are that they are excited to come to school, don't always want to leave, and they love learning.
My Project
Every day we go outside with the students for at least an hour. If weather permits, we bring lessons and activities into the warm shade for students. Most times, we do gross motor activities with the students outside. Pedaling bikes builds coordination, leg strength, and spacial sense. We actually have these exact trikes in our classroom, but they are beyond repair. I have asked many people to help fix them and the department to purchase usable ones for the students, but after two years of the trikes being out of service, the students are really missing out! The students are tired of waiting for district approval and so am I. Luckily, the first set lasted about a decade, so they are very sturdy when new.
By donating to this project, you will be a part of teaching a child how to ride a bike.
You will be a part of training a child's coordination and gross motor skills. You will be a part of improving the quality of our class, especially with the joy the students would exude with working trikes for them to use.
