This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Books are such a powerful tool in the classroom that should bring joy to students! As a first-year teacher, my goal is to build a classroom library where my students feel represented in all aspects of their identities and truly fall in love with the art of reading. The variety of chapter and picture books I am requesting are to build my first library. My students are in a dual-language program, so they all speak Spanish as their first or second language. Often, multilingual learners do not see themselves within the mainstream books in the classroom, so the books I am requesting are representative of the cultures my students and I come from.

Reading allows students to enter into another world and build background knowledge.

My students are coming from underrepresented communities and low-income backgrounds. Some families may not have the resources to prioritize buying books because there may be other needs to be met in the family. The classroom is a perfect space where all students can have access to books for them to expand their literacy skills and build their imagination. My classroom will be a special place for my students to grow as individuals and be able to learn how they will create their impact on the world. As a first-year teacher, I am excited to create a space that empowers multilingual learners and celebrates all cultures!
