My Students

I teach at a public school located on a Native American Reservation in Washington State. Our parents are low-income, second-generation English speakers who are the product of the boarding school system. Their language use is a combination of Native Language and English slang. Most of the families lack the resources to help supply the classroom with needed supplies for instruction or enrichment. The teachers at our school purchase and supply the necessary resources.

I am the only science teacher in our 5th-8th grades.

Pre-school through fourth grade classes are the responsibility of individual classroom teachers at this time.

Because of our rural environment, we are able to experience science through a hands-on vs. textbook method.

My Project

As a teacher, I strive to encourage my students' enthusiasm in the area of science. I hope by using the hands-on approach, that it will spark their desire to investigate their world. Our school has no lab equipment for our science projects; everything is coming out of my own funds.

I do not feel safe asking them to dissect specimens without the proper safety equipment.

I want my students to be inspired to apply the knowledge they acquire to additional projects. I plan to share the equipment with the other grade levels in our school.
