My students need new technology, such as an Easi-Speak microphone, a camcorder, and a color-coded keyboard, in order to create and experience podcasts and recorded readings.

My Students
We LOVE reading and technology, and what better way to demonstrate how much we've learned than by combining the two! With a microphone recorder, color-coded keyboard, video recorder, and listening center, we will be able to create and share our very own podcasts!
I teach students with learning disabilities, mental impairments, and various health disorders at a rural school in West Virginia.
They are each unique in their own way but have one thing in common: they love to learn! My students are intrinsically motivated, love to please their teachers, and thrive on verbal praise. Most come from low socioeconomic families and have difficult home lives. School is not only a learning facility for them, it is a refuge, a place where they can feel safe and comfortable and receive praise for working hard. My students also have difficulty working independently; they often require teacher guidance to complete activities. Independence is important for these children because many have become accustomed to the feeling of "I can't."
My Project
Technology: we can no longer live without it! As a special education teacher, I always end up focusing on the basics of reading and writing and sometimes neglect technology. Creating podcasts and digital recordings of books and stories will benefit my students in so many ways! Not only will they learn to operate various types of technology, but they will be able to demonstrate reading and writing skills, create authentic assessments that can be added to yearly portfolios and shared with family and peers, and explore their creativity in meaningful and exciting ways! My students love to show off! By creating podcasts and digital recordings, they will be able to share their work with everyone! I can only imagine their excitement when we open our class blog and they can watch their very own podcasts!
Because of the nature of my students' needs, technology skills sometimes get overlooked to make sure they know "the basics." But in the 21st century classroom and society, a sound understanding of technology is very important.
With a little encouragement, lots of support, and some new equipment, such as an Easi-speak microphone, listening center, camera, and color-coded keyboard, my students will be able to use today's technology and be prepared for tomorrow's world!
