My Project
Our middle school has a diverse student population that includes students from five school districts. More than one-third of our middle school students come from low-income households. Many students struggle with reading issues and read below grade level. Additionally, it can be difficult to engage students while still having them think critically.
Our amazing, diverse students are eager to improve and have the drive to succeed!
Our students need high-interest, age-appropriate chapter books relating to the theme of Generations. Through these assorted books, students will read and analyze how one generation can learn from a different generation. This will foster reading engagement and classroom discussions focused on our unit theme.
I will use these chapter books to drive instruction. Students will easily locate the books in the book recommendations display area of our classroom. As we read and analyze stories relating to the theme, students will also have chapter books aligned with the theme. This unit supports all my students including students with IEPs, 504s, and ELLs. These chapter books are relevant, and engaging, and lend themselves well to meaningful lessons and activities. I will focus on various reading comprehension activities, vocabulary, making connections, building background, theme, and reading strategies. Students will have choices such as reading independently, in partnerships, and/or in groups. Students will complete differentiated reading prompts and analyze literary elements. We will end the unit with engaging differentiated projects and culminating activities.
