My Students
Our middle school has a diverse student population that includes students from five school districts. More than one-third of our middle school students come from low-income households. Many students struggle with reading issues and read below grade level. Additionally, it can be difficult to engage students while still having them think critically.
Our amazing, diverse students are eager to improve and have the drive to succeed!
Our students need high interest, age-appropriate chapter books. In addition, my students need dry erase boards in order to respond to answers in a quick, engaging manner. By increasing age appropriate, hight interest chapter books to my classroom library, I will strive to foster a love for reading.
My Project
My students are eager to learn but many have not developed a love of reading. Although they have been exposed to many novels, most are taught in whole group. I want to foster a love of reading in my students and increase their reading stamina. My plan is to implement daily independent reading time (SSR) in the classroom and/or at home. In order to inspire a love of reading, I must provide appropriate culturally relevant books for my diverse students. In addition, books must be age appropriate and appeal to their interests and hobbies.
My goal is to give my students choices in what they read by building a classroom library full of engaging, high-interest, culturally relevant books.
By donating to this project, you will be providing my students with access to a classroom library which inspires students to read for pleasure. These books will engage students, allowing them to choose great literature that speaks to them as individuals. Students will self-select chapter books relevant to the unit of study. In addition, I will recommend books based on their interests and previous books read. Due to your generous contribution, I will be able to build expand our classroom library and share these wonderful books with all my students.
The flair pens will be used by students to edit/revise their writing such as their essays and narratives. It is my goal that the color choices of these pens will increase student engagement as they progress through the writing process.
The book rack will be used to display the books so they are enticing and easily accessible for my students.
