My Students

My kindergarten classroom has curious, fun, energetic students. Students returned from a virtual world of learning and entered school in February for the first time since March 2019, when they were preschoolers. I am hoping to acquire more reading materials specific to their needs and reading levels to give them even more opportunities to grow and be successful! I would like to be able to support them through this project.

In my classroom, I strive to create a positive learning environment that celebrates differences and makes all of my students feel comfortable and excited to learn!

The students in my classroom represent many different cultures, languages, and ethnic groups and we work everyday to support each individual student in their journey. They need individual materials and supplies to stay safe from the spread of germs. It will also develop responsibility and independence as they care for the materials.

My Project

Research has shown, that our youngest learners benefit immensely from decodable readers. These are books based on phonics patterns which become progressively more challenging as readers continue learning new skills. The word difficulty increases as students master phonetic skills.

These decodable readers will help students practice reading the phonics skills that are being taught in the classroom.

Using decodable text is an excellent opportunity for students to transfer their new learning into authentic reading. As our youngest learners begin to master the letters and sounds of the alphabet, we want them to use that new learning in order to begin their journey as readers and writers! Decodable stories are specifically meant for practicing these important letter sounds. Students will use the books in small group instruction with me, and then later as books to practice reading independently. Students will also have the opportunity to take these books home to read to their families.
