This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I truly believe that a reader today, is a leader tomorrow. Reading allows our imaginations to go beyond our minds' boundaries and awaken us from within. Help me, help them wake up to reality. Reading is everything. Reading is life.
I teach an ESE class in an urban area where 95% of the students receive some type of government assistance.
I have challenging fifth grade students that desperately want to be able to read like good readers should. Their misfortunes, most beyond their control, affects their behavior and hinders their ability to read well. They easily embarrass, have low self esteem, and sometimes, have too much pride to ask for help. Despite my tireless efforts to promote reading, it becomes increasingly difficult when the books they really want to read are not available at the school library. I, wholeheartedly, believe there is truly a way to get reluctant readers to become avid readers. Two donated e-readers could help me increase their enthusiasm for reading, provide them with diversity in books choices, and instill a passion for everlasting reading. Two e-readers can open doors to getting a child to read. Help me, help them become readers. Good readers.
My Project
Every month students are required to read several books based on that month's theme. In April, students will research famous battles and military leaders in American history. They will learn how our great nation was formed and how it continues to evolve today based on those historical events and people. This project will introduce students to people that have had or had similar life challenges as their own, and how those historical people overcame those challenges. The project will cover several disciplines: reading, writing, and social studies. Reminding them reading spans into other subjects in school. The e-readers would introduce students to the educational benefits of modern technology since most do not own a home computer. It contains an online dictionary that would provide students definitions to unfamiliar terms and an audio feature that reads the book to the students as they read along. This feature helps students properly pronounce words increasing their vocabulary skills.
I tell my students that a rapper reads his music, a football player reads his plays, a singer writes her lyrics, and the President reads his speeches.
Neither one could be where they are today, without learning how to read. The e-readers would allow them to access books they want to read, peak their reading interest, and lead to everlasting reading without resentments or reminders. Indirectly, the e-readers would help more than just 38 students learn to read because reading is truly contagious.
