This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I work with an incredible group of young people. Many students are language learners with family from Oaxaca, Mexico. Many speak Mixteco, an indigenous language, and are learning both English and Spanish. 85% of students are on the free/reduced lunch program, and most families are working class.
I serve students with many different reading levels, and I strive to encourage reading by continuing to expand my classroom library, which already has more than 200 books.
I am always searching for more books that relate to the diverse experiences of my students. I want them to have books that encourage them to explore the world and gain new experiences.
The students I work with often come from backgrounds that make education difficult; yet with the incredible support of a loving and diverse school and home community, these kids find success. They bring their stories, personalities, and languages into the classroom, which creates a vibrant and engaging learning environment. They deserve a quality classroom library.
My Project
I am hoping to expand my classroom library so that students do not need to walk any further than my bookshelf to find a book that suits their interest.
This year, I have several students who have recently moved from Mexico and do not yet speak English, and I haven't had a chance to collect many Spanish books to offer them.
I also have many students who are still learning English or who have learning challenges, and graphic novels help them process what they have read. I particularly want to make sure these students have access to quality literature because, often, these students are left behind due to their struggles with literacy.
