Help me give my students these amazing best-selling titles to continue fostering their love for reading. I am dedicated to making sure students find solace and enjoyment in reading.
This year, I will be teaching in one of the largest high schools in North Carolina. I will be teaching a Foundations of English II course as well as two standard English II classes.
In English II, students are faced with a huge task- passing their End-of-Content (EOC) exam.
This tends to stress and scare most of them as they know that this is what they've been working towards for two years. The worst part of this exam is the fact that it's four hours long and requires students who don't normally read on a regular basis to concentrate and read multiple passages that are extremely long and challenging.
In an effort to boost their reading levels and inspire a love for reading that will translate to conquering this exam, I have challenged my students this year with an Independent Reading Challenge of two books of their choice per quarter. They were so relieved when I told them they were able to pick the book themselves and that has spurred me on to getting them anything (and everything) they want to get their hands on!
My Project
Every year, I hear students say how much they hate to read. It's boring. There's nothing that interests them. They'd rather just watch the movie because they didn't even know it was a book first.
These best-selling novels will be used to foster a love for independent reading.
Students will have the opportunity to read engaging, hand-picked material that fosters their interests and shows them that reading is not something that is boring or a forced punishment. With this project, I hope students will find answers and a plethora of information within the pages of whatever book they choose.
