This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am a proud sixth grade teacher with an absolutely amazing class! I currently work in my hometown and I love it. However, the school I work for is a Title I school. It is located in an inner city where poverty and crime are high and resources are incredibly low. The majority of the items in my class, (from pencils, to a whiteboard, to my entire classroom library), were purchased by me at some point throughout the past four years.
My happy classroom provides a safe haven for my unique, diverse and inquisitive class.
My students have a natural love and curiosity for learning. I want to encourage them and find ways to foster a love of reading in all students. Although they might be young, they recognize the importance of their education and they are eager to learn more.
My students need the necessary supplies in order to build basic foundational skills. The engaging novels that I selected will allow students to master strategies needed to become independent readers. Please provide my students with the opportunity to access the tools they need to be successful! Today a reader, tomorrow a leader!
My Project
Guided reading is an essential and important component in any elementary classroom. Guided reading is small group instruction which focuses on student need and appropriate differentiation. During small groups, I am able to provide effective support for all students. Therefore, my sixth grade students need a variety of guided reading books in order to enhance the skills and strategies necessary to be successful in the classroom. Using great literature will help students build the confidence in their reading skills and reading comprehension strategies.
As the saying goes, "reading gives students a place to go, when they have to stay where they are".
The books I selected will allow students to build independent, reading skills while enhancing their fluency as I provide the necessary support. By donating to this project, you are allowing young readers to find their love of learning/reading and providing them with the opportunity to grow, explore and imagine.
