My Students
I teach a special day class for transitional kindergarten through second grade students with autism. My students are bright, funny and high-energy, but sitting down and learning in a classroom does not come naturally to many of them. They learn academics and socially appropriate behavior through "getting it right" and respond well to visual cues and positive reinforcement. My class is learning the core curriculum along with social skills. My students are learning to read, write and do math just like their grade level peers, but with the curriculum presented at a slower pace and with some modifications to help them learn. My students get most excited about dancing, PE time, music time, and learning through technology.
Our class is comprised of 6 wonderful students - 3 transitional kindergarters, 1 kindergartener, and 2 first graders - five boys and one girl!
We go to school in Los Angeles at a school where 100% of the students receive free lunch. Many of my students come from bilingual households, and are non-verbal or low-verbal.
My Project
My students need over 30 engaging, hands-on books, including National Geographic Readers for a variety of animals, Tree For All Seasons, and Helpers in My Community, to accompany or reading and math curriculum to help them understand the content and to show them how fun reading can be! I am requesting these fiction and non-fiction books for close reading to go with our reading curriculum, and mentor texts to go with our math curriculum!
Giving my students access to these wonderful books is an investment in their future.
My students love reading and being read to, but many of the books that come with our reading curriculum are not engaging enough to meet their needs and they find it difficult to draw connections between the books and their own lives. I'm asking for fiction literature, hands--on and engaging books about math topics, and books about a variety of science and social studies topics, such as tigers, dolphins, sharks, butterflies, plants and holidays to help my students learn about the world outside of themselves. These books will help to supplement what we are already doing in reading and math in class and help my students connect better with the material.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
