Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I work in a low income, high-crime neighborhood in Chicago. I’ve chosen to work with a ‘tough’ population of students. According to the statistics we fall below the state average on test scores. We are a 99% minority and 99% low income school. Just about 50% of our population is limited in English and out of 30 schools in our network (including both elementary and high schools) we rank 10th in attendance. The children show the drive and passion that they want to come to school and learn. Despite the other factors that could work against the students, not only do they show a dedication in learning but I also work with dedicated, persevering teachers.
My students face many obstacles yet deserve a school dedicated to advancing their education, aiding in their inquiries and gaining a chance to rise above the statistics.
My Project
I am requesting some new and exciting books for my 5th grade classroom. I currently taught 2nd and 3rd grade so I want to upgrade my library with appropriate age books. Students don't always have library time as a class throughout the year and being able to enhance our classroom library is a must! A lot of the time my students aren't able to buy books from Scholastic or from book orders. I want to create a flourishing library this year with leveled books in hopes that they can create a strong foundation and continuation for reading as they progress into middle school.
Help them grow to love reading and open their worlds to discovery, curiosity and learning!
