Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
It's never too early to introduce good reading habits. Exposure to literature in preschool promotes early literacy, kindergarten readiness and instills a love of reading. A variety of quality board books will help foster the critical and creative thinking skills of early readers.
My students live in an urban, low-income, Mexican-American community in Chicago, Illinois.
It is a neighborhood elementary school serving grades PreK-7.
The Pre-K to 1st grade students visit the library twice a week. The high volume patronage causes a lot of wear and tear on our soft cover books. Having a collection of durable board books will enhance the children's exploration better than traditionally made books. These books will stand up to the high volume usage and the accompanying wear and tear.
My Project
Quantity does not mean quality. Adding this collection of durable board books will attract even the most reluctant learner to enjoy and explore books. The bright colors and repetitive text focus on literacy development. The rhythmic and lyrical text will attract those that love to reread the same story. Many students will begin to develop meaning from the books that use popular sight words. However, books do not have to have words to be interesting to the young reader. Wordless books encourage children to use their imagination to create their own stories/ideas about the pictures/photos in the book.
Having a collection of educational board books in the library for our Pre-K students will provide them with the chance to explore early literacy.
The bright colors and creative content will attract a variety of readers. The durability of these products ensures long lasting circulation, thereby getting in the little hands of the largest number of learners. This collection inspires an interest in reading as well as prepare pre-schoolers for their step toward kindergarten.
