Our unique Pre-k through 12 environment is the only one of its kind in NYC. Our school serves a diverse population which helps to nurture students of all ages throughout their school career. Our school also serves a wide population of our borough's students because unlike most neighborhood schools, we are not zoned. While most of our population is from one region, our students represent a variety of ethnic, socio-economic, and racial backgrounds, making ours a truly diverse learning environment.
Currently, the availability of up to date, working technology in school is a challenge due to a limited budget and not enough staffing to maintain the computers.
My Project
I'm looking to get a set of Chromebooks for myself and my co-teacher to use during, cohort presentations, research, Socratic seminars, publishing, and book talks in Regents level English and global history. Grabbing and keeping the attention of 10th grade students has become more and more of a challenge as technology steals their focus and imaginations. I've decided if you can't beat them, join them! These computers, along with our work using Google Classroom and Docs, would help take our learning to a playing field the students will engage in and enjoy. They would enhance our daily learning exponentially. We write and research on an daily basis in both English and global history and much of our focus is on student driven learning. Technology like this could help students work with Google docs and other technology resources every day! Students would use them to create interactive documents on Google classroom which can be viewed and shared by the class during Socratic seminar discussion for live, interactive feedback as well as for completion of cohort projects. Several times a year our students present work to their classmates which requires them to create a visual on Prezi, or Google slides, present information, and engage the class. Technology such as this could help those presentations be far more interactive as each student could have a computer in front of them to participate in the activities of the presentation. Students will also use them to publish their written work, edit and review each other's work on Google docs and do necessary research to create college ready MLA style papers. Writing and research are two core components of our English work. The ability to type work in Google docs and have another student edit that work and give feedback in invaluable.
