My students need access to technology in the classroom, especially Fire tablets and iPads that connect to the Internet. The tablets are portable and sturdy, perfect for 3rd graders!

My Students
"Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic." ~ Arthur C. Clarke.
The beauty of this quote is that it sums up the relationship most of my third graders have with the Internet... it IS magic.
I work in one of the poorest neighborhoods surrounding Los Angeles.
While working with the students and families here is both energizing and fulfilling in many ways, their poverty affects some of the choices I have to make as an educator. With the advent of smartphones, many of the students and their parents are becoming a bit more tech savvy, but this has not yet translated into easy student access of usable technology. The vast majority of my students still have no Internet access in their homes. The silver lining in this is that the students are very engaged when I do get the chance to show them how useful technology can be. My students are curious, hard-working, creative, and a joy to work with. Now I would like to be able to bring the 'magic' of technology to my classroom and allow them to become technologically adept Internet magicians.
My Project
I envision my classroom being a place where the students are able to explore the Internet in a safe, productive way. As 3rd graders, they are beginning to do research projects. Typically I would begin by taking our students to the library and exploring the materials there. Sadly, our school library has been closed for the last three years, and the neighborhood library is quite a bit of a trip. I've been trying to alleviate this lack of resources by teaching them how to use the Internet safely and correctly. This too has been hampered, this time by the two computers in my classroom that no longer work. Having tablets in the room will make research so much easier! I am especially excited to think that we will be able to find multiple sources for the ideas we will be studying. Reading about meerkats in the Kalahari desert, for example, and then watching a video of a meerkats foraging, and finding diagrams of their body parts and maps of where they are found. The possibilities are endless.
I believe that easy access to technology and the Internet will be of great benefit to my students.
Having these tablets will give multiple students the chance to work at the same time, while also allowing me to teach lessons in Internet safety and how to use technology appropriately. I am excited to be able to show them how to turn their research into books and presentations. I am convinced it will allow me to show them the 'magic' that technology can bring into their lives.
