My Students

As tempting as it is to read fiction all day, every day, students can learn a tremendous amount and improve their reading skills significantly, by reading nonfiction texts.

My students are highly motivated gifted students at a large school in an urban environment.

They come from all over the city--not a specific neighborhood. 6th grade is a great chance to meet new friends and learn new things. My 6th graders are voracious readers but...many dislike reading nonfiction texts.

My Project

Having this collection of high-interest nonfiction texts will deeply enrich the classroom. I've selected mostly hardcover books, with the hope that they will last and be used in the classroom for MANY years to come. We've also recently invested in a lending library system, which will help ensure that students take good care of their books and return them promptly, for others to use!

Having a good experience reading nonfiction at such an impressionable age will surely be an experience which will stay with my students forever!

With the new Common Core State Standards being rolled out across New York State and much of the country, having these texts will allow me to meet our new set of standards, specifically, those which speak of text complexity and variety.
