My Students

"Do we have to read that book?" is often what I hear as a first grade teacher of beginning readers. By providing more of a variety of books this problem will be alleviated.

I teach in a school with a diverse racial and socioeconomic background.

We have a diverse population of over 700 students. My students interests range from sports, drawing, playing with friends, going to the beach and interacting with electronic devices such as the X box and Wii.

My Project

Research has shown that many of our boys do not enjoy reading as much as girls because a majority of the stories read in many schools are fictional. While girls tend to enjoy fictional stories, more boys tend to be interested and motivated to read nonfiction books. Finding good suitable nonfiction books can sometimes be difficult for teachers to provide in the classroom because of limited funds, unsuitable nonfiction reading materials, etc. This grant would help provide more nonfiction books in my classroom library. It would give all students more opportunities to interact with nonfiction books, but more specifically would provide additional reading materials that would help to motivate my male students to read more.

Funding this project would provide reading materials to help young readers, especially male students be more motivated to read and show more interest in reading.

We know that the more you read the better reader you become! That is our ultimate goal as teachers to produce independent readers.
