Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
All students are special and deserving of a good education!
The unique group of students that I am teaching are of great need, in high poverty but eager to learn.
They struggle every day trying to overcome basic needs. They live in one of the poorest neighborhoods of the city. They are funny, sweet and hopeful. These students are unfortunately at-risk to high crime, poverty, homelessness, unemployment, poor health, poor fitness and poor nutrition, patiently waiting for them outside of the school gates.
My students come from many countries, so they are also learning the English language and customs of this wonderful country. The opportunity to participate in free after-school sport activities is invaluable.
My Project
My school is a Title I school, meaning that the majority of students receive a free and reduced price lunch. The school is very small, with less than 300 students in grades Prek-5th. There are minimal funds available to purchase supplies for my students. Parents already provide minimal supplies at the beginning of the school year since many cannot afford them. Now, almost midyear and after the hurricane Irma, parents are less able to afford basic supplies.
School supplies are essential to the students' development and academic success.
My students do many activities in their interactive notebook, that's why we need the composition books. The other supplies I am requesting will be use to do activities in them and in other areas and centers. Even though students share, we do not have enough for all of my ELL students. I believe that students do a lot better when they have their own coloring supplies and materials. Students will use their pencils and erasers to write amazing stories and complete assignments. The classroom sharpener will keep their pencils ready to use at all times. They will utilize the glue sticks, crayons, and markers to create mini books, and other English language acquisition activities from the two ESL resource books, tape recorder and file folders requested.
The ELL students will have the opportunity to enhance their learning by completing fun hands-on activities in reading and language Arts.
