My Students

Reading Shakespeare as a seventh grader made me fall in love with the work of the Bard and English class in general. That one unit led me to an English degree and to be an English teacher. I want the experience to be one to remember for my seventh graders too as they read Macbeth.

My students are seventh graders who are racially and culturally diverse and economically disadvantaged.

My classroom consists of students from all over the world. Our largest ethnic groups are Hispanic, Kurdish, Arabic, Somali, Vietnamese, African American and European American students. While these are our largest groups, students at my school speak upwards of 40 different languages at home. More than 93% of students receive free and reduced lunch. We are a Title I public school in the Southeastern region of the United States. We are a beautiful blend of cultures, languages, and potential.

My Project

I have requested books so the students can read the full text of the play. The book requested has a more modern version on the right side of the page, and the original text on the left. This allows students to support their own learning. The students will read the play of Macbeth. We will focus on the fact that plays are meant to be seen and heard, so we will be explicitly teaching speaking, listening, acting, and visualizing skills--as well as the reading strategies needed to read Shakespeare. The students will read, act out scenes, and then compare the visuals that exist in their minds, the visuals we create in class to the some different movie and play versions of the literature. Realizing that the visuals and one's own mind and the creation of scenes in class align with professional productions is empowering and a thing to remember. We will create professional Shakespearean scholars by the time we are done!

Students will love the chance to be up out of their seats, acting out the timeless drama of the Bard.

English class is very fun and students deserve to have the monotony of test prep and skill and drill put to the side for some real academic fun. Witches, deceit, ambition, murder, treachery, and literal backstabbing will appeal to the seventh grade condition, as well as prepare them for the Shakespeare they will be asked to read later on. But most importantly, they will know that Shakespeare is fun!
