My Students

Murder. Greed. Revenge. Unrequited love. Sounds like the makings of a great soap opera, right? These ingredients also make for a really good book. They are the key elements of William Shakespeare's brilliant dramatic tragedy, Hamlet.

I currently teach Advanced Placement English Literature at a high-needs school in New York.

My students (largely minorities who qualify for the free/reduced-price lunch program) are just discovering the brilliance of William Shakespeare. I plan to introduce my students to Shakespeare this school year through the play, Hamlet. I believe my students will love the complexities of the play and the deep characters.

My Project

For this proposal, I am requesting copies of William Shakespeare's tragedy, Hamlet, for my students to read. We will spend six weeks in class reading, analyzing, and acting out the play. With their own copy of the play, students will be able to make annotations as they read -- a valuable skill that will help them on the AP test and in college. During our unit of study on Hamlet, I have arranged for teaching artists from the Shakespeare Society to come into the classroom to help students bring Shakespeare's words to life. Students will act out scenes of the play and will analyze the characters' motivations. After all, the best way to really understand Shakespeare is to get up on your feet and do it!

Reading this play will prepare my students for college by providing them with the skills needed to handle complex works of literature.

It will also provide them with the culture capital needed for advanced study and the world beyond.
