Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

It comes down to basics. Literacy is the foundation for every person to succeed. My students have a hunger for learning but are held back by inability. When given the opportunity, they absorb knowledge like a sponge. Providing them with the gift of literacy can lead to the unimaginable.

Everyday my classroom fills with students who are excited about the possibilities.

Our inner-city school is 85% populated by low-income children who come to school everyday with a hope for the future but little knowledge about how to get there. Most of my students say they would like to go to college but feel that it is not an option for them. This feeling is typically a combination of financial and literacy concerns. My goal is to erase that feeling.

My Project

With the books I am requesting, I will be able to accomplish several goals. First and foremost, I will be able to establish a classroom library from which students can choose any book to enjoy during free time. As we do not currently have a library in our school, this classroom library is a necessity. Second, as a reward for achieving certain goals in the Fast ForWord literacy program, a student will be able to choose a brand new book to keep forever. Third, books like "Careers Ideas for Teens" will give students a glimpse of the future. These books will spark imaginations and fuel the fires of success in the eyes of the readers.

What better gift to give than literacy.

These books will provide some children with their first brand new book...ever. These books will continue to provide students the opportunity to feed their brains as they quest toward total literacy in my classroom.
