My Students
I teach 12th grade high school English. Many of the students in my classes have low reading ability and motivation. Many of my students believe they are not meant to go to college. With a severe decrease in education funding, there are currently insufficient resources to purchase relevant books that will interest my students. However, I am a teacher focused on reaching students where they are. As part of my goal to improve student literacy, I am working to bring more science fiction reading into the classroom. I believe that science fiction literature has the power to change non-readers into students working on increasing their abilities to read. These changes will lead to an increase in academic skills to and a belief in the idea of going to college.
My Project
If science fiction novels, including "The Martian," "Armada," "Red Rising," "5th Wave," "Little Brother," and "Steelheart," are purchased for my classes, my students will be reading more and that will increase their levels of literacy. And, as these science fiction novels improve their individual literacy, they will develop as independent readers. Students with increased levels of literacy, who choose to read are more, are more likely to be interested in attending college. And, when they get to college, they are more likely to be successful. When students experience the appeal of a book that can change a student's perspective, this can create a portal of access and motivation for many marginalized students leading them to higher education in colleges and universities. As a teacher, my primary objective is to send my students to college as highly literate individuals. But, my students and I need help.
