This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am a first-grade teacher, working in an urban high-poverty area of New York. My students come from diverse backgrounds and have diverse educational needs. However, what they all have in common is the beautiful excitement and love they have for learning.
Even though most of them come from difficult backgrounds, they never stop trying and NEVER lose their love for learning.
I truly love what I do, and I'm grateful to have such a great community of learners in my class! Every morning I am greeted with 25 huge smiles. I want my students to know that they are important, and I will do anything I can to help them reach their fullest potential because they deserve the best.
My Project
In June, the kindergarteners visited my classroom and said: "Why don't you have more Pete the Cat and Piggy and Gerald books?" I didn't know what to say to them because I didn't want to tell them it was because I couldn't pay for them. So instead I decided to say, "when you get to my classroom in September, I will have all the Pete the Cat and Piggy and Gerald books!"
The smiles on their faces melted my heart and I knew that if I wanted my students to love reading, they needed books they loved.
Help my students along their reading journey with books they LOVE.
