My students need 55 more copies of "To Kill a Mockingbird" by Harper Lee so they can each have their own copy to take home and read to be prepared for literary-based discussions in class.
We team teach in our Title One school; that means that over half our school's student face economic hardship and are in the free or reduced lunch program. I am the language arts teacher on our 8th grade team. Our team is composed of five teachers and 116 students. I work closely with the reading teacher on our team. Our school just began a special program using Springboard, a Collegeboard sponsored program that prepares middle school students for AP classes and, ultimately, college.
We are planning a literary analysis unit of "To Kill a Mockingbird" by Harper Lee. Currently,we do not have enough copies of the book to allow our students to take them home. Many of them have said they would be willing to purchase their own copy but approximately half of them cannot afford the book. These students have shown us that they have the motivation and desire to learn evidenced by the fact that they arrive early to school and stay after school to complete tasks. Learning how to analyze written text will aid our students in their future endeavors.
55 copies of "To Kill a Mockingbird" would enable our students to keep a copy with them for the project. Most importantly, these students would be able to take the books home so that they could prepare for the in class lessons. An added bonus to those that have younger siblings would be the fact that they model good reading habits.
Your help will make a huge difference in the quality of my students' experiences as they read "To Kill a Mockingbird" by Harper Lee.
