This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Federico Fellini said that "A different language is a different vision of life." I would like to give my students the opportunity to become more well-rounded individuals with the ability to have more than once perspective of the world we live in. Studying a foreign language can provide this.
My students attend a Title I public, technical high school in New York.
Our school focuses on preparing the student body with the technical skills for a career in television and film. Our student body is extremely diverse, both culturally and academically. The one thing all the students have in common is that they each chose to attend this high school out of a list of 425 schools. Although we do not have an entrance exam, our students compete with those that do on many levels, including attendance records and regents scores. Our students want to come to school and like being here. Since we are a technical high school, I believe it is extremely important to emphasize the importance of of the arts and mainly, of language.
My Project
Having a class set of textbooks will enrich my students' experience learning a foreign language in many different ways. A textbook provides students a clear path of study in a subject that could become extremely overwhelming. It anchors them to a series of thematic units which organize and clarify often confusing topics and provides learners with a central core. Although textbooks are only one resource that we use in the classroom, it is a very important one. It gives students just enough structure to keep them focused on the building blocks of the language and at the same time weaves in many cultural topics that otherwise may never be touched upon.
With your donations, our students will be able to have a textbook on their desks each day in class.
They will have a resource that introduces them to another world outside our school walls. You can never underestimate the power of a good textbook when used appropriately. It often can differentiate the material by learning style. The images, the charts, the correlated audio and video CDs, the glossaries and exercises, cartoons and short stories, all enhance the learning of a foreign language.
