My Project
As a pediatric OT, working in a lower income area and with students with special needs, one of largest struggles the kids have is the ability to independently complete school work. This is a skill that is worked on everyday, in class and during one to one therapy sessions to help the students be able to overcome their struggles. These tools will greatly help show my students that they can be successful and that learning new skills can be fun. The technology world is always growing and changing, the students as they get older will have to rely more and more on these tools to help them support their learning and provide better accessibility to the school curriculum.
Technology can help support students with special needs to successfully access the skills they need to function both in school and the outside world.
The 3d printer and filament will be used to teach my students skills like following directions, teaching them patience and that putting in effort brings forth a better result, also not to give up. These tools combined with a laptop will support working on students ot goals such as improving eye hand coordination skills, improving visual motor and cognition skills, improving time management skills, improving frustration tolerance skills, and will help boost the students self esteem. When they see that the effort they put in results in something cool, it will motivate them to want to learn new and purposeful skills that can help them be successful in the long run. My goal is to make learning fun and functional. My students are curious and love to explore, they don't often get exposure to technology outside of school, so being able to expose them to new activities and ways of learning would help make gaining new skills more achievable.
