My students need materials to do real forensic investigations. They are extrememly interested in forensics, but we do not have any materials to facilitate real investigations at our school.

I am a 10th grade Biology teacher just outside of Chicago. Our school is extremely focused on academics and prides itself on getting students ready for their future.
Although our school prides itself on providing our students with the best experience it can, we are missing one component. Forensic Science is currently one of the fastest growing fields of scientific study. Colleges are beginning to offer new courses of study to keep up with the demand. Our law classes do a unit on forensics, but this is only from the criminal justice perspective. My students are constantly asking about forensics, and I try to bring in new information to keep up with their interests. Unfortunately, our school does not have the supplies to do any forensics lab investigations, so I can only talk to my students about forensics.
If my students had a simulated forensics kit and forensics media, they could have their own experiences. The simulated forensics kit will allow my students to do multiple investigations that will show them what real forensic scientists do. Also, the video and CDROM components will also provide my students with an opportunity to experience all that is involved in forensics. If we can get these materials, I plan to team up with one of the law teachers for a unit that combines both of our students. This will allow us to provide our students with an opportunity to experience the science and the law components that are involved in forensics. Perhaps this experience may spark an interest that turns into a future career.
Through your support, you will enable my students to have the kind of experience with forensics that they would otherwise not be able to have. I am always looking for ways to make Biology come alive to my students. Getting these materials would allow my students a one of a kind chance to experience one kind of career that they could have in the Biology field.
