My Project
In the field of speech therapy, communication access is highly essential to their well being. At my school, we work with many students who have highly impacted speech needs. We have a growing population of students who are non-verbal or who have apraxia, a motor planning disorder.
I hope to use the iPad to trial augmentative and alternative communication platforms and provide visual language support through engaging apps.
Additionally, given the increasing amount of students identified this year, the need for AAC support is noticeable. For instance, the majority of our preschoolers in the SAI programs arrive with limited language. Given their age, they are not frequently exposed to AAC devices. The area of need is ensuring that students at a young age quickly get access to an array of communication outlets if spoken communication is impacted. Thus, introducing both low-tech to high-tech resources need to be considered.
Given the influx of students, I sometimes require 1-2 trialing devices for our school team to provide insight into a high-tech device is helpful. This will help me move along with students needing a formal AAC evaluation.
With an additional iPad, I can provide more AAC trials for multiple students at once and reach my visual language learners in the general ed population through engaging apps and iPad pen live annotation features.
Thank you so much for providing technology that will make an impact.
