Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are just turning 5. For many of them, this is their first experience in a school setting. Some of the students have special learning needs, and many are learning English for the first time. The majority of their families live below the poverty line and rely on our free meal plan for their children's breakfast and lunch.
Our school is a high poverty, Title I school, with high expectations for all.
Each day, we practice letters, phonics and sight words. We study science and math. We incorporate technology through the use of iPad apps, and we learn beginning engineering concepts through the use of building blocks and other manipulatives. At the end of the school day, the children are so excited to see their parents and tell them all the things they did at school. The parents are very supportive, and they enjoy spending time with their little ones, reading stories and learning new things.
My Project
I want my students to develop strong financial literacy skills. The iPad mini will help us in this endeavor by providing fun apps that the children can use to learn money and counting skills. "Learning Money With Leo" and "Unleash the Loot!" are two such apps. These apps teach money concepts in fun ways and were developed for young children. We will also be able to use the iPad mini with the class Smartboard. Math software, as well as videos, can be mirrored from the iPad onto the Smartboard so that everyone can participate in the learning.
Financial literacy can start as early as kindergarten through learning to count, add and subtract.
Also, learning to make an even swap and trade is a kindergarten step stone to becoming financially literate. I have set up a center in our classroom where my students go to work individually with iPads. Our class size has grown this year, and if this project is funded, our financial literacy center will have enough iPads so that a small group of students will all be able to have an iPad of their own to work with.
By funding this proposal, you will be giving my students an iPad mini and accessories such as an Apple pencil and protective case, that they can use to learn counting and money concepts, to help them develop financial literacy. Thank you for supporting public schools and for helping my students!
