This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students love snack time! We have snack each morning, and a lot of the items they bring from home are far from healthy. When I ask them about this, they tell me they don't like healthy food. Well!

They have inspired this project to learn that healthy snacks can indeed be tasty.

My students are transitional kindergarteners, which means they will be turning 5 before the end of the year. They are culturally, linguistically and economically diverse. Ours is a Title I, high poverty school, and many of my students come from economically disadvantaged homes. My class includes students that are both English and non-English speakers, as well as students with disabilities. Each day we have an early breakfast in the classroom, as well as a morning snack time.

My Project

I am requesting granola bars and juice for their snack time. I know they enjoy these types of snacks, because they told me so! Plus, these snacks are much healthier that the chips and gummy snacks most of them bring.

To help clean up after snack time, we would like a vacuum that doesn't blow dust into the air.

Air quality is so important to us since we were exposed to unhealthy levels of mercaptin, methane and bromide during a natural gas leak last year. Baby wipes and paper towels will also be used to clean up after our healthy snacks and breakfast in the classroom.

In addition to healthy snacks, I am requesting a water purifier and filters for our classroom drinking fountain. Even though the children bring water bottles, they enjoy the novelty of our drinking fountain. They need for this water to be free of lead and other harmful chemicals that are in the water supply. This will also be an opportunity to teach that plastic water bottles are bad for the environment and not sustainable.

We will pair our healthy snacks with a study unit about the importance of a balanced diet and daily exercise. A set of music CDs will provide dance and physical fitness activities for them to do together. New stories about healthy foods will anchor this unit and provide illustrations and motiviation for them to continue to make healthy eating choices at home.
