My Project

My students LOVE hands on learning experiences. I teach 2 inclusion classes where hands on learning is extra valuable. We've been learning about the moon's phases and how the Earth's tilt causes the seasons. Unfortunately, these ideas are very abstract and hard to visualize without physical models. We have been using images and the model materials provided by my district. However, the materials provided don't allow students to create their own models where they can combine what they've learned about the moon, sun, and Earth. Our goal is to create our own models to solidify our learning.

My students have been looking at last year's models in the case in our hallway and have been looking forward to this project all year!

Last year I was able to find extra materials in our storage room; however this year I don't have enough for all my students. Please help me fund this project. These students deserve to experience this project and show off their learning and creativity!

Students will use the foam balls to create their own Earth, sun, moon system for a specific moon phase and season. Working in a team each group will have 1 sun, 4 earths (one for each season) and 4 moons (a phase of their choice). I have other materials from last year such as, clay, popsicle sticks, markers, and pipe cleaners. We just need a foam board base, and the foam balls. The 1 inch balls will be our moons, the 2 inch balls will be our earths, and the 3 inch balls will be our suns! Please see my project photo for an example from last year.
